Eleven area chess players competed in 110 rated chess games at Yavapai College on Saturday, April 27th. Blitz, also known as speed chess, uses a special timer where each player has five minutes for an entire game. This was a double round robin which means each player played two games, one with the white pieces and one with black, against each of the other players.
Austin Wilson, a 10th grader from Peoria, finished in 1st place with 19 points. He took home $70 for scoring eighteen wins against two draws. He gained 37 rating points moving from Class B to Class A.
Doug Olson, Dewey, finished second. He won $60 for his record of sixteen wins, one draw, and three losses. He gained 60 rating points.
Douglas VanBenthuysen, Prescott, playing in his first Blitz tournament was the top-Class C and below player with 9.5 points. He earned $50.
Aubri Wilson, a 10th grader from Peoria, was the top-Class E and below player with 6.5 points. She won $40 and gained 46 rating points.
