Magee Marsh

Magee Marsh

Although we made our annual trek to Magee Marsh a week before International Migratory Bird Day, it was hard to see the birds because of the foliage. Some of the more interesting sights for us were an American woodcock strolling with her four young and an American robin feeding three chicks. We identified the following warblers: yellow, chestnut-sided, black-throated blue and green, yellow-rumped, palm, and black-and-white. We also saw great blue herons and great egrets. A walk along Lake Erie revealed the sight and smell of a large number of dead fish lining the bank. [According to the June 20, 2006 Columbus Dispatch, State officials say that in May, viral hemorrhagic septicemia was detected for the first time in Lake Erie. The virus is responsible for kills of yellow perch and freshwater drum.]

Steer Barn

Steer Barn

On our return trip, as is our custom, we stopped at the Steer Barn in Upper Sandusky. Truly, this is a step back in time. The quantity of food is difficult to imagine. A lazy susan with three salad selections: a pea and peanut, carrot, and potato salad along with a mound of garlic bread; a homemade tomato and basil soup; a huge portion of prime rib, wonderfully prepared baked potato, and a loaf of bread. We always enjoy seeing the plumage of young people on prom night, too.

Columbus Symphony Concert Sunday, May 7 2006

The May 5th Columbus Symphony program started with the Prokofiev Classical Symphony, Op. 25 (Symphony No.1). In the second piece, the featured artist, Vladim Gluzman, wowed us with his virtuso playing of his, on loan, 1690 ex-Leopold Auer Stradivarius in Glazunov's Concerto in A Minor for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 82. The final piece was Elgar's Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36 ("Enigma Variations"). Although I have heard criticisms of the sound quality in the Ohio Theatre, it is a beautiful venue. City Center, unfortunately, is in bad shape. Mostly empty stores, even the parking lot was deserted while charging more than in previous years.
