Mission San Xavier del Bac

Mission San Xavier del Bac

Several years ago we stopped at Mission San Xavier del Bac for a quick look. On this visit we were able to join a guided tour where we learned about the symbols used in the art work throughout this National Historic Landmark. Jesuit Father Eusebio Kino first visited this site in 1692. Later the Franciscans replaced the Jesuits and built the current church, the oldest intact European structure in Arizona, between 1783-1797. The Tohono O’odham people helped build the church and are still served by it.Most of the statuary features Saint Francis and Saint Xavier. Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, Lily of the Mohawks, also has a distinctive wooden statue.Mission San Xavier del Bac, the White Dove of the Desert, is well worth visiting.
