Salmon Ruins

Salmon Ruins

Beginning in the late 11th century, people from Chaco Canyon came to the banks of the San Juan River to build the great house community now called Salmon Ruins. In the late 1890s George Salmon homesteaded the property where the ancient ruin was located. His original homestead still stands along with a bunkhouse, root cellar, and historical implements. Architectural replicas from different cultures are found in the Heritage Park on the grounds. Salmon Ruins Museum provides background information related to the 1970s excavation and development of Salmon Ruins.
