San Luis Obispo Mission

San Luis Obispo Mission

After traveling through the San Joaquin Valley between grape vineyards, orange orchards, and fields with cabbage, scallions, and red onions, we stopped at San Luis Obispo de Tolosa which AAA describes as a gem. This Mission founded by Father Junipero Serra (1713-1784) in 1772 was built by the Chumash tribe. A noon mass was being conducted in this unique L-shaped chapel. We spent a few minutes touring the historical museum and wandered around the grounds of this active parish located on a full city block in the heart of the city.

An adjacent corner houses the History Center of San Luis Obispo, formerly a Carnegi library from 1904-1955. We arrived shortly before a dozen eighth graders. A special exhibit, “Phoebe Apperson Hearst: California’s Grande Dame,” featured background on her contributions. We only spent an hour for these quick tours because parking is at a premium at a quarter per ten minutes.
