Elephant Seal

The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery is located about seven miles north of where we are staying in San Simeon. In 1992, according to the E-Seal News, the first pup born was in this area. Last year more than 5,300 were born! Males grow to as much as 5,000 pounds and 16 feet long; females 1,800 pounds and 12 feet long. According to the newsletter, the juveniles and adult females start departing in May leaving mainly sub-adult males, that is, males that have reached puberty and are beginning to grow their signature nose but are not yet at a size or age to command the respect they need to breed. We observed a certain amount of jousting behavior between males. A few of the seals had yet to complete their molting. We walked the entire distance of the boardwalks and hiked the Boucher Trail which goes near the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse.
