Reclining Buddha's Head

Reclining Buddha’s Head

If the Emerald Buddha was small, the Reclining Buddha is very, very large, 160 feet long. The heels of the Reclining Buddha display 108 panels with symbols such as flowers, dancers, white elephants, tigers, and religious paraphernalia. Worshipers make a donation and receive a cup with stones which are then individually deposited into 108 bronze bowls lining the corridor along the Reclining Buddha’s backside. Wat Pho is one of the largest and oldest temples in Bangkok. It lies directly south of the Grand Palace which it predates. More than one thousand Buddha images adorn walls. A massage school, Buddhist monastery with monks in residence, and a grade school are located on the grounds. Chinese giant statues carved out of rock guard the 16 entry gates. According to legend they were used as ballast in the ship trading with the Chinese. Bangkok has many Buddha temples. This one is well worth a visit, and allows photography.
