Granite Mountain

Granite Mountain

Today’s hike started from the Wekuvde picnic area that is part of the Granite Mountain Recreation Area. We have previously done this hike traveling clockwise; today counter-clockwise. The 3.6 mile moderate loop started at an elevation of 5,640 feet on Trail #350 for 0.1 mile, then connected to Trail #351 for 0.7 miles. We then covered a 1.5 mile stretch along Balancing Rock Trail #349 where a rock appears to be sliding off a giant granite monolith and where Surprise Spring is found. Views of the Doce Fire scars are visible near the end of the trail. We returned via 1.3 miles on Surprise Spring Trail #350. The high point is 5,930 feet. There were numerous remnants of spot fires and expansive views of Granite Mountain. My own surprise was not seeing evidence of shovel work in putting out these fires. We encountered one lone female hiker just as we started and later a man running clockwise with his dog passed us twice. Another great day for a hike!
