Hole in the Wall Trail

Hole in the Wall Trail

The Constellation Trail recognizes the crash of a U.S. Air Force Lockheed Constellation manned by five Navy crew members who died in February 1959 when this plane went down for still unexplained reasons. In October 2011 a memorial was erected to record this tragedy. Some remains from the crash are in evidence near the beginning of the loop trail. We parked in the Phippen Museum parking lot where a group of hikers was forming. We started before they did and encountered only a half dozen couples traversing the trail in clockwise fashion while we moved counter-clockwise. We hiked the outer trail whose segments carry names such as Phippen Recon Trail, North 40 Trail. Lost Wall Trail, and Rock Wall Trail. We hiked about 2.2 miles with an elevation change from 5,000 feet above sea level to 5,240 feet. Several inner trails are possible. The most prominent is the Hole in the Wall Trail which I walked the last time we hiked in this area. A beautiful blue sky dramatically offset the boulders that form the eastern boundary of the Granite Dells. Balancing rocks offer intrigue. Looking north it is possible to see the outline of the San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff. Another great Prescott area hike!
