Wupatki Pueblo

Wupatki Pueblo

Wupatki National Monument is adjacent to Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument north of Flagstaff, Arizona.  We visited the Wupatki Pueblo which is located behind the visitor’s center.  Current thinking is that it was built by the Sinaqua people who had the ability to farm and live without much water.  The largest dwelling had several levels and about 100 rooms.  Sandstone slabs, limestone blocks, and chunks of basalt were used in the construction of the pueblo and set in place with a clay-based mortar.  Farming improved for this people after the eruption from Sunset Crater because the thin ash layer absorbed moisture and helped prevent evaporation.  There are several other pueblos in this area that remain for us to explore on a future visit.  Several Native American tribes – Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo – live in this region.
