Thumb Butte

Thumb Butte

Thumb Butte offers a wide selection of interesting hikes.  I’ve previously hiked 0.3 miles north on the Pine Lakes Trail (#316).  From the 5700 foot trailhead’s elevation near one of Thumb Butte’s picnic areas, there is a gate at 0.1 miles as the trail ascends an open area on a south-facing slope.   Around 0.3 miles there are junctions with several other trails, most of which I have explored.  On this late afternoon hike I continued on #316 which descends about 100 feet to a rocky creekbed ravine that later becomes shaded.  Despite the name, this trail does not go to the Pine Lakes.  Also, older maps don’t show that it connects with the Ridgetop Trail (#317).  This 1.2 mile trail with good views of Thumb Butte loops back to the junction with #316.  Fall is a great time to take a hike in the Prescott area.
