Big House

Malabar Farm

The popular and prolific novelist, Louis Bromfield, established a showcase farm in the late 1930s. Malabar Farm with its 32-room Big House attracted many celebrities including Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bromfield’s love of the land demonstrated soil conservation efforts such as contour farming. After taking a look at the exhibits in the Discovery Center followed by learning about a spinner’s craft in the barn, we walked to the cave on the Butternut Trail. The temperatures on this first Saturday of October reached the high eighties. Columbus, Ohio recorded its highest temperature ever at 89 degrees, three degrees higher than the previous record. Lunch at the Malabar Inn Restaurant included drinking plenty of water and tasting a Riggwelter, a full flavored strong Yorkshire ale with the Black Sheep label. Nearby Loudonville was celebrating its annual Street Fair with a stage, carnival rides and games, fair food, and tents with exhibits. Mohican State Park is also close by. The wood covered bridge will be a lovely spot for viewing leaves in another week or so. The lodge was the site for an evening wedding. Life’s activities took many forms on this fall weekend in central Ohio.
